Locally
produced Buckeye Baskets share Ohio with friends around the globe
(December 8, 2006) -- Buckeye Baskets,
a social enterprise initiative started by United Disability Services (UDS)
three years ago to provide creative employment for people with disabilities,
is spreading cheer around the globe this holiday season. As the novelty of
giving a gift with philanthropic appeal and home state pride catches
on locally, more and more corporate and individual customers are sending
baskets abroad to places like England, France and even China.
Sandy Hartzler, a human resources representative with Rubbermaid Home
Products, sums up what makes Buckeye Baskets an attractive gift-giving
option by saying, "The Buckeye Baskets have been very well received by our
associates for a couple reasons--they like the contents and they especially
like the support we give United Disability Services. We give UDS baskets to
new hires, interns and new moms--and everyone comments on how much they
appreciate them!"
Buckeye Baskets provide a unique opportunity for a team of 21 individuals
with disabilities served by the agency's Vocational Services program to be a
productive part of the creative process by transforming empty baskets into
beautifully wrapped gifts. A special gift tag with the signature and photo
of the person who assembled it is included with each basket purchased
letting the recipient know that a gift with a charitable purpose has been
selected just for them.
The gift baskets feature products and specialty foods made in Ohio and range
in price from $12.95 to $69.95 (does not include tax or shipping). A
variety of holiday-themed baskets are available including "Winter Wishes,"
"Making Seasons Bright Sleigh" and the large-enough-for-sharing "Sugar Plum"
basket, just to name a few.
Orders are being taken online at
